Ewan McGregor Nearly Turned Down ‘Star Wars’

Believe it or not, Ewan McGregor almost turned down the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Why?

He thought the Star Wars prequels were too mainstream for him, McGregor revealed during an interview with The Telegraph.

Star Wars is Star Wars, it’s something I grew up with as a kid,” said McGregor.

“At first, I was very reluctant to do it, because I saw myself as this urban, grungy actor doing films about heroin and stuff, and that’s who I felt like I really was. But the nearer I got to it, the more I wanted to do it: and it wasn’t for money reasons, because it was back in the day I got paid nicely for it,  but it wasn’t ridiculous by any means. It was to do with being in it and it didn’t feel like Hollywood. George Lucas hated Hollywood he was in San Francisco following the beat of his own drum.”

Early in his career, the Scottish actor starred in films like Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and Velvet Goldmine.

Thankfully, McGregor decided to take the role of the iconic character. He has recently expressed interest in returning to a galaxy far, far away.

An Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, anyone?

In the meantime, Star Wars fans don’t have too much longer for the next movie.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first standalone movie in Star Wars universe, hits the big screen December 16.
