Samuel L. Jackson To Star In ‘Shaft’ Sequel

A new Shaft movie is on it’s way.  Samuel L. Jackson and Survivors Remorse star, Jessie T. Usher are set to star.  Rumors are Usher will play Jackson’s son in the film.

Variety reports, after originally planning a full reboot of the ’70s classic, New Line is reverting back to a familiar formula for the next installment of “Shaft,” while also leaving the door open for a new face to take over the franchise.  New Line began developing a new “Shaft” in 2015 after acquiring the remake rights and setting up the latest version with producer John Davis.

The 2000 Shaft reboot also starring Samuel L Jackson as the nephew of the original Shaft was a box office success opening up at number one, and grossing over $107 million worldwide.

The Shaft franchise became popular during 1971 when blaxploitation films were on the rise. The first film starred Richard Roundtree as the titular character.  The popular song “Theme From Shaft” by Isaac hayes won the Academy Award for original song. The film was preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2000.

Tim Story is directing the upcoming film while black-ish creator Kenya Barris is writing the script.
