Decoding This Mysterious ‘Close Encounters’ Teaser Trailer: This Means Something

On Monday, Sony low-key released a teaser trailer on YouTube, and it is clearly a reference to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of The Third Kind. There are static clips from the original film intercut with air traffic control graphics. Not to mention the title of the clip: “This Means Something.”

Check out the teaser and see what you make of it:

All of the clips here appear to be from the original film, except that last brief shot. It’s tough to tell what that is, some sort of landscape or maybe a different planet? Who the hell knows.

As for that website at the end, it appears to give you updates on UFO sightings if you so wish. Other than that, there is nothing tied to this, no director or title or information otherwise. What does this MEAN?!

It seems like this could mean one of three things: sequel, remake, re-release. The last options makes the most sense because December 14 marks the 40th anniversary of the original Close Encounters, so that makes sense. Then again, with Mystery Box marketing becoming a thing these days – ironically enough from J.J. Abrams, who borrowed from Spielberg to make his own career – this could be some subtle long-gap sequel.

Just don’t be a remake.

What do you think it is?
